Greg McElroy Proves Smart Kids Aren't Always The Brightest

With the NFL entering the playoffs, it's closing time for the 20 teams that missed out on the postseason. Other than the Colts with the number one pick in the draft, the New York Jets have gotten the most press out of these teams due to a scuffle among the team. Santonio Holmes was benched during their final game against the Dolphins for arguing with teammates. Bart Scott gave reporters a one-finger salute after cleaning out his locker. Finally, rookie quarterback Greg McElroy went on an Alabama radio station and ripped the attitude of his team.

McElroy is best known as being the Rhodes Scholar/Crimson Tide quarterback that made a living handing the ball off to Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson. His only professional highlight (or lowlight) is this preseason gem where quantum physics seemed to take up the part of his brain that used to hold the rules of football. But because we associate McElroy as being an intelligent and articulate human being, we forget that common sense is not always a strong trait of book-smart individuals.

The first rule of any team in any sport is what happens in the locker room stays in the locker room. It's one thing for a veteran years removed from a particular season to comment on the attitude of that team. It's another for a rookie that was on the IR all year to call his teammates selfish just days after the season ended. If he wants to get traded to a better team, what organization is going to want a very average quarterback that has now been pigeonholed as a guy that will air internal issues to the media? However, McElroy is a smart guy and will learn from this mistake. I expect him to issue an apology to his team and organization in the coming days and keep his mouth shut until he throws a legal pass in an actual NFL game.

Now excuse me while I go throw up because the Chargers just fired their defensive coordinator, but not Norv Turner and their general manager after an 8-8 season that allowed the Denver Tebows to back into the playoffs.

Startin' Up the Blog

I've attempted at blogging before, but I've either lost interest or time or both before I wrote much. Now, due to my winter intersession class, I'm giving it another go. The majority of the content of this blog will be sports related, but there will undoubtedly be popular culture references along the way. I get the bulk of my information from traditional media outlets, but I also enjoy websites like Deadspin, Awful Announcing, and Grantland that provide a different look at the sports world.

While Twitter has become my main social media outlet, my style of writing is better suited for blogging. My thoughts are often long and drawn out and need more than 140 characters to convey those thoughts. However, I am addicted to Twitter and love to retweet funny, sports-related tweets.

All this being said, I'm going to enjoy blogging again. It's something I wish I had more time to do. Sports is a passion of mine and I love to discuss it with others. Interact with me here through the comments or via Twitter here.
